NEW BONAIRE AMBASSADORS!
Faith Swanson, Florida, USA
When we asked Faith why Bonaire is so special,
she told us the following:
"Bonaire has always been special ever since
I set foot on the beautiful island over 20 years
ago. That was back in March 1983. I remember my
first official tour of the island with Humphrey
Thode, he was a tour guide back in those days.
I'll never forget that tour. We saw beautiful
flamingos, aqua blue water, piles and piles of
conch shells at Lac Bay/Cai, mountains of sea
salt, and lots and lots of goats. It was at that
time I fell in love with the friendliness and
peacefulness of beautiful Bonaire.
"Back then I stayed at Bonaire Beach Hotel,
then it became Sunset Beach Hotel and I stayed
there for many visits. José Bloem, always
made sure my visits were special and arranged
for me to stay in my favorite room. At the beach
bar Henky, Sisso, and Gregory always took good
care of me. Henky had some secret recipe and made
the best margaritas in the whole world!
"I have wonderful memories of Regatta and
other fun times at the Sunset Beach. But the fun
continued even after Sunset Beach was gone. The
Dive Inn became my new "hotel", for
many visits and now we've discovered Windsock
Apartments. I even stayed at Hotel Rochaline one
time. Every place I've ever stayed on Bonaire
has offered wonderful hospitality and always made
me and my friends/family welcome at all times.
"My child, Richie, just turned 5 years old
and he's already been to Bonaire 5 times. He was
only 5-1/2 months old when he made his first trip.
He even participated in a Jump Up in his stroller
at that age and has nice memories of Carnival
and the Children's Parade. I think my child's
favorite thing about Bonaire is going fishing
on Piscatur with Captain Chris.
"Yes, I'll always consider Bonaire my home
and I hope someday my dream will come true and
Bonaire will be my home. I will be back in May
for year number 21.

SECOND
ANNUAL KING OF THE CARIBBEAN IS ANNOUNCED
From Dec. 2 to 9, 2003, Bonaire, Netherlands
Antilles, will host the second annual King of
the Caribbean PRO-AM windsurfing competition.
At the 2002 event Matt Prichard, from the USA,
and Swiss Karen Jaggi were named Freestyle World
Champions for the Professional Windsurfers Association
while local sailor Tonky Frans won the King of
the Caribbean title and top prize money.
Announcement of the second annual King of the
Caribbean was made during a recent press conference
hosted by the Bonaire Sailing Foundation, organizers
of the event. "Last year’s event was an undisputed
success and we are looking forward to another
great event this year," said Bonaire Sailing
Foundation President Elvis Martinus when making
the announcement. "The first King of the
Caribbean event put Bonaire on the world windsurfing
map and we plan to stay there."
The 2003 event will again be both a professional
and an amateur competition just as the first one.
Amateur competitions will take place on Saturday
and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7. Registration will be
held on 2 December for pros and amateurs and also
on Friday, 5 December, for late arriving amateurs.
It was also noted that Bonaire sailing brothers
Tonky and Tati Frans will be entering the event
as the #6 and #7 ranked professionals in the world.
In describing the success of last year’s King
of the Caribbean event, Martinus quoted several
articles from the windsurfing media. "Going
to Bonaire for the King of the Caribbean contest
was like visiting heaven on earth," was the
first sentence in an article for WindSurfing Magazine
from the United States. More than half a million
windsurfers read the magazine.
Boards Magazine, from the United Kingdom, said
about the Bonaire event: "There has never
been freestyle competition performed at a higher
level." FunBoard Italia called Bonaire, "a
new, beautiful spot with fantastic conditions
for freestyle," while Wind Magazine from
France said: "a superb finale for freestyle
on Bonaire." Planchemag, another French magazine
titled their 22-page article: "Le Phenomene
Bonaire."
The 2002 King of the Caribbean event was also
very popular with the professional competitors.
Karen Jaggi, female World Champion 2002 called
Bonaire "Paradise for freestyle" while
PWA Champion Matt Prichard ranked Bonaire one
of the top three windsurfing sites in the world.
Reviews by the pros at the end of the event saw
comments like: "Best event of the World Tour"
and "Best event I have ever attended."
The PWA said they had seen "some of the most
amazing freestyle competition in the history of
the PWA" during the Bonaire event.
Jace Panebianco, a pro competitor, writing for
one US publication, said of the Bonaire King of
the Caribbean event: "They are proud of what
they have in Bonaire, proud of the island, proud
of its people. That sort of attitude permeates
every interaction I had during my two weeks living
in Bonaire. . . the competition went off better
than any true freestyle event I’ve ever been to."
Sailors and visitors also appreciated the many
social events which featured island culture and
cuisine. A number of similar events are being
planned for the early December event which creates
an island-wide party attitude for the week.
Coverage of the 2002 Bonaire King of the Caribbean
event was seen around the world by several hundred
million people via television, magazines and the
Internet. Martinus said plans for 2003 are to
top this number so that every windsurfer in the
world knows about Bonaire and the perfect windsurfing
conditions here.
KLM from Europe and Air Jamaica from the USA
and London will again be offering special packages
for competitors and spectators. KLM now has two
daily flights to Bonaire from Amsterdam. Air Jamaica
flies to Bonaire three times a week on Wednesday,
Saturday and Sunday in December. This year, Bonaire’s
own airline BonairExcel, operated in conjunction
with KLM, will also offer several daily flights
from Curacao and Aruba.
Heineken has agreed to be the official beer sponsor
for the event and several other sponsors are already
on board, including the Bonaire Hospitality Group
and Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association. More
sponsors are needed to stage the event. Those
who wish to participate can contact: Gabrielle
Nahr, Elvis Martinus, or Delno Tromp.
It is also expected that there will be a number
of island-wide parties during the week. Last year
Rincon and Tera Cora both hosted the competitors
with parties as did a number of hotels. "This
year there will probably be fewer parties so the
competitors can rest at night," said Martinus.
"There will definitely be an opening event
the first day and a closing event once the winners
are announced. There will also be an awards event
for the amateurs and perhaps a big party in the
middle of the week. This will encourage the competitors
and visitors to see some of the sites and restaurants
on their own on the nights there are no scheduled
events."

of the Caribbean Fact Sheet (Microsoft Word

TCB EUROPE ATTENDS LARGE TRAVEL
AGENTS' ROAD SHOW
The first week of October
was a busy one for TCB Europe. Together
with other Caribbean islands, Bonaire presented
itself to over 600 travel agents in the
Netherlands and parts of Belgium. This CTO
Road
show was aimed at educating and entertaining
the travel agents in order to stimulate
them in selling trips to the Caribbean.
Bonaire, represented by TCB as well as BHG,
succeeded with a very distinctive presentation.
Bous Scholts and TCB's Roger Davids shared
Bonaire's little known secrets with their
audiences. Afterwards people could easily
see that Bonaire is a quiet island, with
a wonderful underwater world and a very
personal touch.

Bonaire
and Holland more and more have started to
cooperate on windsurfing events. Last month
the Dutch pros came together to decide who
would be crowned Dutch Champion. Ben van
der Steen won not only this title, but also
a 7-day trip to Bonaire. He will practice
his skills and challenge our Bonaire-kids.
So Tati and Tonki: watch out for Ben, he's

BOOST
TO GOLDEN FLAMINGO ELECTION
Next Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht
the Golden Flamingo will be presented for
the third time to the Dutch travel agent
who serves our tourist best. As you know
by now, the Golden Flamingo is a people's
choice award. In 2002, it was won by Maduro
Travel and in 2003 by Bonaire Fun Travel.
In short, the ballot cards will also be
distributed via TCB Kralendijk. This will
give the competition a definite boost. Who
will be the next winner?

TCB Europe managed to bring
the German TV-show ‘Wolkenlos’ to Bonaire.
This show will present Bonaire as part of
the Dutch Caribbean below as well as above
the water surface. Captain Don's Habitat
will host them and BonairExel ensured the
transportation. Many thanks to both.

UPCOMING
SHOW: WTM LONDON
Bonaire will be present at
WTM in London. This is, next to ITB Berlin,
Europe's largest trade show and the place
to contact and contract European tour operators
in order to ensure distribution in 2004
and 2005. TCB Europe will facilitate our
hotels and resorts at this show. BHG joins
with Plaza Resort and their other properties,
as will Sand Dollar and Harbour Village.
With our direct KLM flights plus the extra
possibilities offered by BonairExel, our
island once again will have an excellent
opportunity to offer distinctive programs
to the various tour operators.
See who already sells Bonaire:
www.infobonaire.com/touroperators.html.
After WTM in London, TCB will join Vakantiebeurs
Utrecht (Jan), Duik Vaker (Feb) and ITB
Berlin (Mar). Other shows, like BOOT and
the UK Dive Shows will be attended by the
BHG- and/or Bonhata-properties.

Once again TCB Europe succeeded
in gaining over 1 million Euro's in free
publicity for Bonaire. The report will be
sent to both BHG and Bonhata offices and
arrive on Bonaire at the end of this month.
Of course one can also browse a copy at
the TCB Office at Kaya Grandi. Once again
TCB Europe would like to thank all hotels,
resorts, car rentals and restaurants who
supported the press trips in the last months.
We don't know how to do it without you!
