NEWS BITS

a. Bonaire Night in Italy

The following is from Sarah Matera, of the Bonaire Restaurant Association who accompanied the High School Students during their training in Italy.
"Yes, you guessed it right!!"
We did a Bonaire dinner/cocktail party in Italy. Decorated with Bonaire flags, menu in Papiamentu, Caribbean Cocktails, (no swizzle sticks though), and island music for the final touch of dancing.

Our chef's under the guidance of Teacher Vernon Martijn prepared a 4 course meal for 20+ people including AECA President Andrea Biondi and Regional Government of Emilia Romagna Fabrizia Monti.

It was truly a Bonaire experience which they will not forget.

TCB-EUROPE Report

a. TV-soap on Bonaire!.
These weeks the TV-soap 'Onderweg naar Morgen' is shooting on Bonaire. It will take over 10 days to shoot more then 30 scenes. The program is to be broadcast on Dutch Television starting Dec. 30 until mid February. In the drama series the actors are visiting the grave of one's father, located at Karpata. Lots of dramatic developments take place afterwards on the island! Many thanks to ABC Travel and Plaza Resort for their support.

b. National Geographic for travel agents.
Over 100 free copies of the August issue of National Geographic Magazine were available for the Dutch Travel agents. This edition features Bonaire as THE worldwide example of a destination where sustainable tourism seems to work. We thank NGM for supporting this promotion.

c. E-mail works: KLM-news posted within one day throughout Europe!.
Our new e-mail program was only just operational as KLM announced to second big change in a few months. Starting Dec. 1, 2002 they will fly twice a day nonstop AMS-BON. In addition to the 'Quito flight' there will also be the 'Lima-flight' will use our island for its hub. We managed to let all our business relations throughout Europe know within a day. Thanks to modern technology!

d. TCB finds partners in Ecuador en Peru.
The Tourist Offices of Ecuador and Peru are more than happy to start working closely together with TCB. We will promote the dual-destination-product together starting Vakantie 2003. Although we already managed a low-key promotion on WTM next November. These tourists will certainly be tempted by our product-development on products like bird watching

e. Telegraaf coming to Bonaire.
This month the Dutch newspaper Telegraaf will come to Bonaire for a week. Their opinion is that Bonaire is spoiled 'just like Curaçao and Aruba' (quote Telegraaf); of course we aren't, that's why we invited them over to see for themselves. The article will be published around Christmas.

TCB-NYC Report

a. DEMA 2002 - October 22 - 25, 2002.
DEMA 2002 opened in Las Vegas last week, and as the first DEMA Show since January of 2001, everyone arrived anxious to catch up on friends and events in the industry and discuss projections for the future.

Representing Bonaire as exhibitors at this year's show were: Belmar Apartments, Bon Bini Divers Bonaire, Buddy Dive Resort, Captain Don's Habitat, Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino, Photo Tours Divers, Plaza Resort Bonaire, Sand Dollar Condominium Resort/Bonaire Dive and Adventure, Toucan Diving, and WannaDive Bonaire.

Although the show did not officially open to the trade until Tuesday, October 22, Bonaire's participation started on Monday evening by co-hosting, along with Aruba and Curaçao, the travel agents cocktail party following their day long seminar on selling dive travel.

Speaking to a group of over 110 travel agents and dive shop owners, Candice Kimmel of TCB-NYC gave the Bonaire presentation which consisted of a two minute overview of what made diving special in Bonaire and the showing of a three minute edited version of the destination video. Our trade show banners proclaiming diving, snorkeling, adventure and family fun "is easy on Bonaire" decorated the room. A continuous loop of underwater footage shot during the March 2002 TV shoots in Bonaire played on the large screen throughout event (with the exception of during the presentations) and visually reinforced how compelling the diving is on Bonaire.

During the event, Bonaire's exhibitors distributed their product information and mingled with the agents answering questions. The new mini CD's and the "Diving is Easy" self mailing brochure and flyers were also distributed.

With the shows official opening on Tuesday, until the final bell Friday afternoon, the exhibitors were at work, spreading Bonaire's message, answering questions and signing up future business.

A BIG THANK YOU to all of the Bonaire exhibitors (and our many tour operator and airline partners also in attendance) for their investment of time, personnel and money to help Bonaire make such a strong statement at this year's show.

In the issue the journalist highlighted that suddenly the Ecuadorians can visit Bonaire very easily since KLM started to use the Flamingo Airport hub. Also the magazine told about the presentations in Quito and Guayaquil in cooperation with the Bonaire Official Delegation and Surland.

KLM, the main tour operator, has informed their agents of the beauty of this ecological Dutch island, where the main attractions are not the beaches but in its pristine diving considered the best in the Caribbean. It is an island very safe and calm, ideal for the family, with packages established for the market; one of them offering travelers to Europe to stop over in Bonaire for some days without paying additional charge.

NEWS FROM THE TOURISM SECTOR

a. Calabas Restaurant at Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino

Divi Flamingo announced recently that the Calabas Restaurant is now fully operational.

The reactions have been marvelous, both by our guests and by the local critics. The Dutch magazine Duiken mentioned it with a nice picture of Divi Flamingo in their section 'Antillen Nieuws', supporting our effort to bring European business to Bonaire and to Divi Flamingo in particular.

We also are now promoting the newly constructed fitness center that was opened in September. Treadmills, step machines, rowing machine, a nice variety of dumbbells may be used by all hotel guests in a fully air-conditioned room. The center has indeed given Divi Flamingo
true added value for our guests to stretch and work out.

Besides all the resort activities our Casino is on the move also. They have changed their look and their slot machines completely. All machines are paper bill equipped and they have introduced the 'cent' machine. The guests insert their dollar bill and the machine converts the amount to the credits with what the machine operates. When the guest wins a game and there is a pay-out, this is no longer done in bills, but in tickets. According to the Casino Manager this has improved on hygiene and the proper way to play machines with a great entertainment value...

An overview of Divi Flamingo's activities in the last 3 months:

- In July we touched up the entire south section

- In August we rebuilt the Calabas restaurant and started the garden area

- In September we took out all remaining wall mounted air conditioning units replacing them with new split ac units and finalized the Fitness Center.
R
eplacing the 'old' casino slot machines with state of the art new machines

Currently we are working on a new monthly project, the handicap accessible rooms. These are planned to be ready in November, again showing that Divi Flamingo is back.
