A week Gone By

The following story is from a "trip report" post on Bonaire Talk from a recent visitor to Bonaire. TCB would like to share it with our you.

Vacation minutes have a length of their own. They are not like work minutes of even the minutes that happen when you’re waiting for food in a restaurant and you are really hungry. They are long and yet fleeting. In the languid pace of the days I experienced a rebirth of my desire to dive and the wonder. I advanced my skills with the help of a local mermaid and I did many of the things that my minutes at home do not allow. To read and sing, to nap and to watch many movies on my little DVD player. I think that the slow pace of life on Bonaire helped in all of these things. It is a land of friendly natives and ex-pats that combined to bring a culture that lays over you like a comfortable blanket. The radio I listened to everyday in the truck was the touchstone for my feelings about the island. In any one hour you could hear American, Dutch, or Spanish songs sung in any or all of the languages, with the rhythms of each added as dressing. I never felt like an outsider, I felt that if I made the effort, I too could live here and blend into the palette adding my own color to the mix. I truly enjoyed myself on Bonaire and it was the people not so much the place that made it so for me. From the girl with the hopelessly high platform shoes at the internet café, to beautiful women that seemed to flow from every corner, the smiling attitude of the clerks in the shops, to the way that people would wave to each other as they passed on foot and in car. The small things made a difference too. The phones work, there are ATM’s, the water tastes good and there was always a hot shower for me. No lack of good food and variety. As harsh as the landscape can appear to new eyes, it belies the gentle spirit of the island and its people. I travel the world to find new things, to see new things and to find special people. I found them all here. I ended the trip as I always do when I dive by thanking the sea for holding me safe within its arms and wish her peace until we are together again. I hope to be in Bonaire again, it is a place that gives more than it takes. At least it was so for me.

Air Jamaica launches third flight to Bonaire

This Sunday, July 1, 2001 Air Jamaica will launch it's third weekly flight to Bonaire.  As with Air Jamaica’s Saturday and Wednesday flights, which started in June 1999 and October 2000, respectively, the new Airbus service will depart from Montego Bay for Bonaire in the late morning and return to Montego Bay in the late afternoon, allowing for convenient connections to Air Jamaica’s U.S. gateways.                                             Back to the top

"The Bonaire Kids":   King of the Cape in Boston

They came from all over the globe representing Maui, Barbados, The Gorge and Spain. There were license plates on cars representing half of the US. There was also a large group setting up camp from Bonaire? Where? Bonaire, the small island territory in the Netherlands Antilles. The biggest ticket and draw for the Third Annual King of the Cape Freestyle Pro AM were "The Kids".

I first met "The Kids" and the Bonaire contingent when I went to Midwinter's in Florida last winter. I pleaded with my boss to allow me a Friday off so I could fly down and scout the kids for our event. I had seen them on one of Dasher's videos and knew I had to invite them to King of

Bonhata handing a cheque to the "Bonaire Kids"

the Cape. The first one I saw one this tall, ripped red head (not the born with kind of red but out of the bottle magenta). His smile was infectious. Then I saw all these smaller ones out on real adult gear ripping it up on the windy waters at Calema. I ran around searching out the leader of this windsurf cult and found Byron Tromp, a super friendly man who was as enthusiastic about coming to the Cape as I was. The rest is now history as well as future news.

King of the Cape, modeled after King of the Lake in Garda, Italy, is a freestyle competition. This contest attracts world-class windsurfers from around the globe to compete side by side with local and regional competitors. The event delivers non-stop action in almost any weather condition. This year we were blessed with warm sunny days, but the wind was only right for those who excel in the light stuff. It blew from 5-12 the whole weekend. Bonaire sailor Ron Mayer, a pro competitor, was psyched for the light winds. He kissed his fingers as a chef would kiss his after tasting a superb meal. Ron loved the light stuff, and he would prove this to the judges when he placed 5th overall in Men's Pro.
Freestyle events are very visual for the spectators. It is a perfect opportunity to "ham it up for the crowd," and the Bonaire sailors really knew how. Take little Fammy Vingerhoets with his long blonde hair, waving to the crowd during his tacks and jibes. Then there is the little imp of the group, Kiri Thode. I begged Byron to leave him with me. This kid rocks. He can rail ride tail first on a wave board. If he wasn't smiling it was because we hadn't fed him in time. He knows how to work the crowd. Then there is Tonky Frans, the red head I met in Florida, only now the red is gone for a more mature look. As with his cousin Kiri, Tonky works the crowd, giving out Shaka waves as he sails back winded in the shoreline. His brother Tati was the wonder of the crowd. He wowed us with a flat-water loop several feet from shore. Tati almost competed as an Amateur because of his age, but Race Director Marc Lefebvre and Byron decided his expertise warranted his entry as a Pro. It was a very profitable decision as Tati placed second in the Pro division.
And speaking of how the other  kids and men placed? Each division was flanked with some winner from Bonaire.  Choko Frans placed first in the Men's Novice and Chris Bernabella placed second. Keep in mind these young boys competed with men twice and three times their age. Time on water sure counts in this sport. Living on a windsurf paradise doesn't hurt either. In Amateur Men, Keke Dammers placed third.

The big news of the weekend was the Pro Division. King of the Cape 2000 winner, Marcos Perez from the Professional Windsurfing Association Tour (PWA), flew in from Spain to defend his title. Other world-class sailors competing for the $6,000 cash prize purse  were Martin Van Geeghoven from Canada and Jace Panabianco from Maui and Web Pedric from The Gorge. Another crowd pleaser, Brian "Irieman" Talma, was there from the sunny island of Barbados. But it was the dynamic young men from Bonaire that wowed the crowd with their freestyle tricks, personable attitude and down to earth manners.  Pros Tati and Tonky and Ron all placed in the top five,  bringing home cash to reward their hard earned efforts. The camaraderie and dedication was apparent. Watching their coach Elvis Martinus working from the shore, even changing boards with Tati during the crucial last Men's Pro Heat, was amazing. Not once did Rocky, Bo Boi (Grandpa to Kiri, Tati and Tonky) or Bryon ever leave the boys, whether they were competing, training or distributing Bonaire travel packets to the crowd. Team effort reigned with this group.
In the end, Bonaire dominated the competition. Bonaire flags and t-shirts were visible everywhere. The press and camera crew from around the country were eating it up. And so were "The Kids." Word is they will be back to defend their titles June 7-9, 2002.

European press experiences the Dive Festival for the first time

During the Dive Festival a number of European journalists  visited Bonaire. They engaged in several activities in addition to diving, in order to provide much better coverage of all the soft adventure possibilities on Bonaire. The picture from left to right, shows Christian de Splenter (Fun Plongee), Brigitte Sins (Algemeen Dagblad), Rien Floris (Noord Hollands Dagblad), Desiree Roberts (TCB Marketing), Alexandra de Jong (Penthouse), Mieke Bleiji and Bertus Bleiji.

Also, a first time Dive Festival visitor was Rob Keersmaekers manager of the popular dive magazine "Duiken". Rob has visited Bonaire twice before, but this was his first experience with the Dive Festival. Besides being the manager of "Duiken", Rob Keersmaekers is responsible for the magazine "onderwatersport".

Rob thinks that Bonaire is an ideal place for relaxing, diving, kayaking, fishing, windsurfing and the place to experience the happiness of a friendly community. From last year June to April 2001, Rob has written a monthly two page article on Bonaire showing all the other activities that Bonaire has to offer besides diving.

Shortly the magazine "Duiken" will start with a new section about the Netherlands Antilles. If you have any information that you would like to announce in this new section of the magazine, please send your information to robkeersmaekers@vipmedia.nl .

Travel Partner Support

“ISLANDS INTHE PARK - MIAMI":

In our continued efforts to support our travel partners, Bonaire was represented at the Air Jamaica Islands In the Park festival on Sunday, May 20th at the AT&T Amphitheatre in Bayfront Park in downtown Miami.  It was a huge success as over 3,000 people came to experience the music and culture of the Caribbean. At our table, we distributed our new flyers and answered many, many questions. People were interested in learning about Bonaire, or talking about their wonderful experiences that they had while on Island. All the tourist boards present were kept busy during the event as the day was filled with Caribbean music, food and overall positive energy.  Another Air Jamaica success for sure!

"ISLANDS IN THE PARK - NEW YORK":

For the second consecutive year, Bonaire will be participating in Air Jamaica’s Islands in the Park festival in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY, on Sunday, June 17th and at the Travel Agent’s Trade Show on Friday, June 15th at the JFK Ramada Hotel in Queens, NY.  We’re sure this year’s event will be equally as grand as last years.  Once again we’ll be celebrating the unique culture and diversity of the Caribbean while promoting Bonaire as the ideal vacation spot. We’re preparing the banners, shipping the collateral and will be ready to go! Any hotelier who is interested in joining us for either event, please contact marie@adams-pr.com for the details.

 "FORE!!!":

Once again, Bonaire will be one of the Destination Sponsors of the celebration dinner at the 2nd Annual Air Jamaica Caribbean Golf Classic on Wednesday, June 20th at the Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, IL.  The golf classic was such a “hole in one” event last year that golfer participation has almost doubled!  The Bonaire banner will be flying high that day and we wish all the golfers “Hopi Suerte!

NEWS FROM THE TOURISM SECTOR

Dammers Wins in Hawaii

Bonairean windsurfer, Christian “Keke” Dammars, on a two-week visit to Maui, made a dramatic showing last Saturday, June 23, at the 17th annual Maui Race Series.  Keke, sponsored by the prestigious Neil Pryde Team, along with 75 athletes from all over the world competed in the venue at Kahana Beach, Maui, Hawaii. He won the Hoyle Schweitzer Course race in the Men’s Formula One Design Category.  Overall, “Keke” came in 18th after being in the top ten.  If it were not for a broken mast, he certainly would have place among the top 5.

The Bonairean Jet                     The event organizers named “Keke” "the Bonairean Jet" because he actually flew over the Hawaiian waters, leaving his competitors in his wake.  In the Freestyle Category, he came out the top winner from among 35 other contestants and walked away with the “Prince of Maui” title in the Junior Category.

All of Bonaire is extremely proud of Christian’s success and TCB wishes to salute him and all those who helped make his trip possible.  And, now on to the Aruba High Winds Competition!

Cleaning up Klein Bonaire

Klein Bonaire is the most important turtle nesting area on Bonaire. Last year’s results showed Klein Bonaire had 75 % of the nesting attempts for all of Bonaire. Therefore, STCB cleans up the nesting beaches on Klein every year prior to the nesting season. On Saturday, May 12th,  STCB organized a Coastal Clean Up. Enthusiastic volunteers gathered at the Town Pier early in the morning. The amount of enthusiastic participants was surprising! Almost double the amount of volunteers that showed up last year. STCB was very happy to see so many old friends and new faces among them including 8 young volunteers representing Jong Bonaire. One couple brought their Antillean neighbors and also tourists were counted in the volunteer group

Thanks to the Bonaire Marine Park and Jake Richter, STCB was able to transport everyone to Klein Bonaire. It turned out to be a very successful morning. The volunteers collected a lot of trash. In total 150 bags were amassed and the result was not only visible by counting the amount of bags; the beaches looked natural and clean again! After the hard work everybody came together at Donkey Beach to enjoy a delicious BBQ. It was a successful morning in many ways, especially the presence of the youngsters of Jong Bonaire.  Afterwards some of them showed interest to become a volunteer for STCB. The involvement of youngsters like these is something that is the highlight of this year’s project.  Special thanks to Bonaire Marine Park, Jake and Linda Richter, Selibon N.V. and the Antillean Rice Mill.

Sea Turtle Conservation on Bonaire: the project

The main goal of Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) is to protect the sea turtles around Bonaire and to prevent them from  extinction To achieve this goal, a project proposal was made with help of WIDECAST (Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network) in 1993. The STCB project consists of two very important parts. The first consists of research. In 1993 a lot was still unknown about the sea turtle population. Back then STCB didn’t even know if nesting still occurred on Bonaire for example. Gaining knowledge about the sea turtle population is a prerequisite for a successful conservation project. If you don’t have the knowledge, you are not able to create suitable management plans and pass on that knowledge to others. And that is the second part of the STCB project: raising awareness, especially amongst the local community.

Our research project consists of morning beach patrol. This part focuses on the nesting population. Early in the morning STCB monitors the beaches of Klein Bonaire and Bonaire to identify turtle tracks. STCB also conducts regular dive and snorkel surveys to gain more insight in the residing juvenile sea turtle population. The research also includes a photo identification project, night surveys, sighting sheet network and feeding habitat studies. The awareness campaign consists of participation in the snorkel project for the Bonairean youth, slideshows for locals and tourists, press releases, development of STCB video and a children’s book. STCB also organizes the Coastal Clean Up which STCB project has been running since 1993 with great success!

"Welcome to Bonaire": a new sign at the airport

Arriving visitors to Bonaire are being welcomed to our island by a new sign posted at the airport's exit.  More impressive yet is the giant iguana sculpture that has been crafted. The more than life sized image is a reminder to be on the lookout for these timid reptiles who have been known to sun bathe on the pavement.  It is also one of the creatures of Bonaire that visitors have been able to enjoy seeing in its natural habitat.

Dive Inn (Article by Dive Inn Bonaire N.V.)

Dive Inn Bonaire N.V. and Ocean Adventures N.V.  are happy to announce that they have recently signed the Dräger Americas contract.

As an authorized Dräger Rebreather Training Facility and Service Station they offer rebreather intro dives, guided dives and certification courses on Dräger Dolphins, but very soon will have Dräger Rays available too. All their units are equipped with Aladin AirXO2 and OXY2. Dive Sorb and Nitrox Tanks for rebreathers are available. At the end of 2001 they plan Rebreather Instructor Training on Dräger units in Bonaire.

Rebreathers for recreational diving. Diving is one of the last adventures. Rebreathers offers a new experience in the underwater world. You’ll be surprised by the lack of noisy, annoying exhaust bubbles, while diving with rebreathers. Most recreational divers are diving in a depth between 15 and 20 meters (50 to 70 ft). Rebreathers offer a lot of advantages in these regions. Up till now silent diving was only available for the military forces. With the Dräger rebreathers, silent diving is now safe for recreational divers as well.

Why use Rebreathers? Divers, over the years , met and solved many problems. Cold waters are no longer a problem and dive computers makes diving simple and safe. The development of enriched air Nitrox diving offered longer and potentially safer dive times. Open circuit systems however are noisy and uncomfortable, the exhaust bubbles scare wildlife and can interfere with vision, and the weight of the equipment makes getting in and out of the water inconvenient.

Enter rebreather like the Dolphin lightweight, portable, simple to use, it revolutionizes Nitrox diving. Extending dive times up to 10 times as compared by conventional diving. Reducing bubbles noise to an absolute minimum and hiding those few bubbles behind you and not in your face. Compared to normal Nitrox diving, a rebreather system has a much better utilization of breathing gas. With conventional systems on a 20 meter ( 70 ft) dive we will have a utilization of 1.3%, the rest 98.7% is lost. With a rebreather at the same depth a utilization of approx. 35% is reached. With a Nitrox 50/50 mixture you will have the opportunity to dive up to two hours at 20 meters with only a 4 liter ( 20cft) tank and 200 Bar (3000 Psi) used in the Dolphin as compared to the 12 liter (83 cft) tank used in conventional systems.

The Dräger Dolphin rebreather stands out because of its robust and reliable technology. Five different dosage devices enable you to dive the Dolphin with four Nitrox mixtures and even pure oxygen.

Shy marine inhabitants are no longer afraid of your presence and accept you as a free member of their world. It allows you to get really close to marine wildlife, so great shots garanteed for photographers and no more “But-shots”. For the first time you can experience diving as it should be, in total silence!

For all your questions, reservations, maintenance please contact our fully equipped Service Station, 7 days a week, non-stop from 8.30am-5.30p at Kaya CEB Hellmund 27 – Chachacha Beach.

On Saturday June 30, Bonaire's own International Windsurfing Champion, Olympic category IMCO Juniors, Elton "Tati"Frans, travels to Crozon-Morgat in Brest France to represent the Netherlands Antilles in the 'Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2001.

Tati is a young man with an impressive background as a windsurfer. Just to mention a few of his achievements: he is the IMCO Juniors Champion of the 2000 North American Championship held last year in Canada; the IMCO Juniors world classifying winner of the Midwinters 2001 held in Florida and has has recently won 2nd place in Pro Division in Cape Cod Massachussets.

The Championship will take place from July 2-12 in Crozon-Morgat where Tati will meet his coach Mr. Vladimir Plavsic. Mr. Plavsic has guided Tati successfully last year in Canada and has urged the Bonaire Sailing Foundation to send him to the World event in France this year. Tati has repeatedly proven himself in various regional competitions and the time is right for him to compete amongst the big Europeans and other professionals on an Olympic level in events organized by the International Sailing Federation.

This trip is made possible thanks to KLM, who is sponsoring the ticket to France and NASAF -the Netherlands Antilles Sailing Federation who has paid for the registration fees. Tati is undergoing extensive physical and mental training by his instructors Elvis Martinus, windsurfing Olympic Champion Patun Saragoza and Joe Woodley of Joe Fitness Center, preparing for his greatest challenge ever. He will sail under his official number AHO-9 as illustrated on the picture above. Tati will be returning to Bonaire on Friday July 13. Tati, Good Luck and all the best!

"The World's First Internet Banquet and Scuba Dive": here's a way to win free travel and do a good deed

A one-of-a-kind Internet event has been launched from the small island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean.  Titled “The World’s First Internet Banquet and Scuba Dive,” the new website will give visitors a chance to win free round-trip airline tickets between the USA and Bonaire on Air Jamaica and ALM and between Amsterdam and Bonaire on KLM. There are also free hotels stays at eight leading resorts on the island and 12 sport and health packages.

There are 45 door prizes in all; ten of which are worth more than US $1,000.  They are all part of a fundraising drive for Jong Bonaire, the youth center for teens on the island.  To be eligible for the door prizes, website visitors merely make a donation to the non-profit organization.  Here’s how it works.

Visitors to the website www.jongbonaire.org can enjoy a “virtual banquet.”  Great food will be “served,” but no calories.  There will be interesting entertainment, but no long speeches.  Many will call it the ideal fundraising event.  The virtual banquet is being hosted by Jong Bonaire, (pronounced young bon-air) which is a non-profit after school youth center on the small island in the southern Caribbean. Donations to Jong Bonaire of US $100 are automatically entered in the door prize drawing.  In addition to the eleven grand prizes of airline tickets and free hotel stays at leading island resorts, another 12 prizes are worth from US $150 and $600.  And there are free desserts, real ones, for all donors.

Donations can be made on-line with a credit card or check from around the world using the secure Charity Web system.  Or, if people don’t want to donate on-line, they can mail donations or make direct bank transfers.  Donations in the US go to a tax deductible 501c(3) foundation: Friends of Jong Bonaire (EIN #13-4090990).

For on-line donations at the website www.jongbonaire.org, all that’s needed is a valid credit card or checking account.  The site is linked to the secure Charity Web system.  Within minutes after a donation is made, the donor will receive an e-mail receipt acknowledging the donation and a similar receipt will go to Jong Bonaire for entry in the door prize drawings.

CharityWeb is an organization created to help non-profit organizations use the Internet for fundraising. CharityWeb uses a secure server that is totally dedicated to managing donations to authentic non-profit organizations and will never use the names of donors to the charities it represents.  Its list of non-profit clients include: C.A.R.E., the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Amnesty International USA and many others.

If people prefer to donate off-line, they can send a check to: Friends of Jong Bonaire, Merrill Lynch DTC #5198, Account # 820-04B36 (note "b" NOT 8 before the 36), c/o Steve Cacciatore, VP, P.O.Box 9173, Quincy MA 02269-9727 USA. e-mail to steve_cacciatore@ml.com if there are questions or if a bank transfer is preferred.

For donations on Bonaire or from the Caribbean, transfers can be made to Sentro pa Hubentut Jong Bonaire, Maduro & Curiel’s Bank Bonaire, Account #103.716.01, Kaya LD Gerharts #1, Kralendijk, Bonaire.  Checks can also be sent to Jong Bonaire Donations, Kaya Simon Bolivar 16, Kralendijk, Bonaire, along with donor’s name, address, phone and fax numbers and e-mail. Donors by mail or bank transfer need to provide their name, full address, phone and fax numbers and e-mail address so they can be notified if they are a winner of one of these exciting door prizes. There will also be “tickets” for sale at two Maduro & Curiel’s Banks on the island (downtown and Hato branches) and Valerie’s Airport Shop.

The fundraising site, www.jongbonaire.org is offering donors a unique opportunity to sample the island’s restaurants, take and insider’s tour of places like the Cargill Solar Salt Company and the local water production facility.  There is also the chance to buy artwork, photography and music from island artists.  All proceeds go to the youth center.

According to Hakkenberg, the entire island is getting involved with the event.  “Local support for Jong  Bonaire has been exceptional with virtually every tourist-related business contributing.” The hotel prizes are for two people at some of the island’s leading resorts: Buddy Dive Resort, Capt. Don’s Habitat, Deep Blue View Bed & Breakfast, Lions Dive Resort, Sand Dollar Condo Resort, Black Durgon Inn, Harbour Village Resort and Plaza Resort.

All donors to Jong Bonaire will receive a “Just Desserts” Coupon Book for free desserts — real ones — at leading island restaurants.  Value of the coupon book is US $ 50, or half of the cost of a ‘ticket’ donation.  Donors will also receive a free Bonaire scenic “wallpaper” for their computer.  The donation period will last from May through December 2001, with drawing for the prizes on 30 January 2002.  Winners will have until 30 March 2003 to use their prizes.  Complete details about the prizes, how to donate and lots of information on Jong Bonaire can be found at www.jongbonaire.com.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer elementary school visits Bonaire

A group of 5th graders of the Dr. Albert Schweitzer elementary school in Curacao paid a visit to Bonaire last Monday June 18. The group of 36 students were accompanied by 13 parents/groupleaders and their teacher, Miss Pourier, who's been bringing her 5th grade for 6 consecutive years to Bonaire. Their trip has been for both recreational and educational purposes, visiting points of interest and participating in a variety of activities such as snorkeling and kayaking. This year the school kids had the opportunity to meet the "Bonaire Kids" at Sorobon and get their first introduction to the Windsurfing sport by our own island pros, Elvis, Patun, Tati and Ruben.                                                                       Back to the top
