This report is intended for all those that have an interest in Bonaire's tourism industry. The report can be shared with other parties. Should you want to use information in this report in a publication, please send permission request to the Tourism Corporation Bonaire.

SUMMARY OF MARKET PERFORMANCE 2007

Compared to the year 2006, there was an increase of 16.9% in 2007. The visitors increased from 63.552 to 74.309. An all time record for Bonaire. After a small decrease in tourism arrivals of 1% in 2005, the total amount of visitors in 2006 kept growing and as anticipated booked a very strong growth for 2007. Positive results were due to an increase in seat capacity/airlift from the Netherlands, United States, South America and Caribbean, an increase in room capacity and a strong demand for the island as a result of innovative and continuous promotion.

The North America market showed an increase of 19.4% as compared to 2006, when it increased by 6.7%. The economic situation was characterized by, among others, a weak dollar in 2007. The latter led to the Americans favoring domestic travel and travel to destinations with their currency pegged to the dollar, such as Bonaire. This was particularly pronounced among the baby boom generation - Bonaire's target market -, who consider travel to be an integral part of their lifestyles rather than as a luxury purchase. Additionally, the number of consumers certified to become scuba divers in 2007 actually grew in Bonaire's largest US geographic markets. However the major influence in 2007 was increased US airlift from the Northeast and the continually growing awareness in the marketplace of the other services introduced in 2006. At this moment, the flights to and from Bonaire offer visitors better flight connections and it is expected that this will only get better with the introduction of the non-stop Delta Airlines flight in February 2008! As a result of better connections and added seats to Bonaire this market showed an increase of 19.4% in 2007 compared to 2006.

The European market grew by 11.4% in 2007 as compared to a decrease in tourism arrivals of 6.2% in 2006. European arrivals reached an all time record with more than 31.427 tourist arrivals in 2007. Europe's primary market, The Netherlands bounced back strongly in 2007 booking an increase of 25.7%. The introduction of ArkeFly next to the KLM flights, led to a change in the marketing approach in 2007 whereby the majority of the resources were allocated towards the Dutch market, so as to capitalize the opportunity. As expected the tourism arrivals from some European countries, such as Great Britain, Switzerland and Norway declined due to this changed marketing approach and the decrease in seats available
through KLM. Furthermore Bonaire has developed into a strong sympathy brand throughout the years, and has become less interchangeable with other islands. The overall strategy is focused on the attraction of quality tourists, a strategy which has to be followed throughout the chain.

The South American market grew by 25.6% in 2007 as compared to 2006. Venezuela showed a strong growth in 2007 and remains the primary market in South America. Brazil showed a slight decrease of 0.9%, mainly attributable to airlift difficulties in getting to Bonaire. Bonaire is strongly positioned in the Brazilian dive market, but has to improve the airlift connections so as to translate this into tourism arrivals out of Brazil. South America accounted for 6% of the total tourism arrivals to Bonaire in 2007.

Tourism Arrivals from the Caribbean region account for 5% of total tourism arrivals. Tourism arrivals from this region have increased by 21.9% in 2007. Aruba remains the primary market and did increase of 21.8% in 2007.

June 24th to the 26th.. a huge diving group from Scubatec, Venezuela

We must keep on eye on this diving school.  Ma Victoria, owner of Scubatec is in love with Bonaire.  She is becoming an expert chartering planes to Bonaire for their groups.  She has a nice dive shop well located in Caracas focused on the high end consumer.

During the Regatta 2006, Scubatec brought its first group (46 divers), chartering a flight with Aerotuy.  In 2007 during Easter Week, a new charter operation with Aerotuy was contracted to the island with 53 divers.  Now in 2008, a first group of 47 divers was on Bonaire during Carnival. It was a DAE charter flight, who for the first time flew directly to Bonaire for Scubatec.  And a second group recently returned from Bonaire on June 20th to the 24th with 74 divers on a charter operation with Avior Airlines.   For sure, Ma Victoria will be recognized as our “Buddy of Bonaire” for being the diving school bringing more divers to the island on charter flights.

Richter Art Gallery Opens on Bonaire

BONAIRE, N.A. – July 10, 2008: Artists Linda Richter and Jake Richter, long time residents of the Caribbean island of Bonaire, announced today that they have opened a new fine art gallery on the island, the Richter Art Gallery.

The Richter Art Gallery, located in a new, specially constructed addition onto the Richter’s home in the Belnem area of Bonaire, features a variety of fine art and unique craft works, all created by the Richters.

Linda Richter specializes in fine oil painting and having developed a special style she refers to as “Nature Portraits”. Limited edition prints of Jake’s works are available at the gallery.

Krystyana Richter has developed graphite sketching into a new organic art form, and is also contributing her passion for hand-made jewelry and bead-men to the Richter Art Gallery, while Bas Richter has designed and developed special paper constructions which celebrate the fauna and aquatic world of Bonaire.

The Richter Art Gallery is presently open by appointment only to allow visitors the full enjoyment that private viewing offers.
