TCB Bonaire | Local Report
From the Director's Desk
Our 17% increase is the culmination of lots of hard work over the past few years by many people and organizations on Bonaire. We have come a long way since 2001 when our arrivals had dwindled down to 50,395 which was caused by the tragic attack in the US. Now, Bonaire recorded its highest total of tourism arrivals in 2007 with total of 74,309 representing a growth of 17% compared to 2006. This is a new record for Bonaire’s tourism and can be attributed to improved airlift, increase in room capacity and a strong demand for the island. Bonaire Dive Into Summer June kicks of our Annual BDIS celebration with the International Year of the Reef Week, June 21–28: Sand Dollar Condominiums will host this week focusing on Bonaire's role as a world leader in marine conservation. The week will feature dives and seminars with Jan and Alexandra Cousteau of EarthEcho International; REEF fish count dives and snorkels with Bonaire's own naturalist Jerry Ligon; interactive workshops with Bryan Dias from the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL); and a parade and food festival in the center of town at Wilhelmina Park. One if the Highlights of the celebration will be the first of four Taste of Bonaire evenings in the Wilhelmina Park from 6-9 PM on Sunday June 22nd. It promises to be a real treat this year with more than a dozen different vendors to tempt you! On a more serious note, we have been following the situation with the US airlines and analyzing how it may impact our arrivals Fuel costs have risen to 40% of airline operating expense causing massive first quarter losses for all airlines, some of whom have only recently recovered from bankruptcy protection. US Airlines have already grounded dozens of older non-fuel efficient aircraft (5 to 10% reduction in fleet sizes) from their fleets this fall to increase efficiency. The flights most likely to remain in place are those which are making profit or which have Revenue Guarantees
As you know, due to exceptional performance, none of Bonaire’s flights are operating under a revenue guarantee. We have achieved excellent load factors on our service, so Bonaire flights should be profitable for the airlines. However, American Airlines has recently announced its first round of reductions, which is impacting the Caribbean and their domestic connections drastically. The announced reduction will lead to a decrease of Bonaire’s seat capacity out of the US by approximately 25%. The afore-mentioned is in connection with American Airlines’ drastic cuts in San Juan, whereby it is cutting its operation with American Eagle by half. As per September 3rd 2008, American Eagle will fly to Bonaire from San Juan 3 times a week instead of the current 7 weekly flights. Two weeks ago a meeting was called for Ministers/Commissioners of Tourism in Antigua, by CTO. Minister Elvis Tjin Asjoe and Candice Kimmel represented Bonaire at the meeting. However, the outreach to our current airline partners has already begun prior to the meeting to determine impact on the island. Our office is in continuous contact with the airlines to work on compensating the lost capacity. Not wanting this month’s Directors desk on negative note, we are confident that we will continue on our positive path and see steady yet sustainable growth in the near term. Last but not least, last week TCB signed its first ever Collective Labour Agreement. We are very proud that TCB has been able to crystallize this and hence reinforce its commitment towards the wellbeing of its employees. I would like to thank our valuable employees for their hard work and dedication throughout the years and congratulate them on this milestone.

News from the Tourism Sector
Caribbean Wind & Sun Vacations Offers Grandparent/Grandchild Dive Vacations to BonaireKralendijk, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, May 16, 2008 - Grandparents these days are right there in the mainstream of life and are often very active compared to our own grandparents. In current times, grandparents are often the valued care givers of their children's offspring. Their valuable role in the family system is even recognized by celebrating Grandparent Days in many schools! In Bonaire, a huge senior market contributes to the local economy. Caribbean Wind & Sun Vacations celebrates the grandparent by offering Grandparent/Grandchild Vacations to Bonaire. Bonaire is divers’ paradise for kids. The gin-clear, shallow water and the availability of kids programs at many dive shops make the learning environment ideal. For the newbie or the advanced diver, conditions are ideal year round. Certified grandparents can bring their grandchild down and try one of the many programs designed with kids in mind. One such program at Dive Friends Bonaire that is designed for the wee ones is Supplied Air Snorkeling for Youth experiences. SASY allows them to breathe from a regulator and mini-tank at the surface while wearing a flotation device, which does not allow them to submerge.
Dive Friends Bonaire Launches Baggage Rebate ProgramHelps divers defray escalating costs of travel Kralendijk, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, May 30, 2008 - The recent skyrocketing oil prices have caused airlines which serve Bonaire to institute new fees, including, in certain cases, a $15.00 fee to check one bag of up to fifty pounds, and $25.00 to check a second bag of up to $50.00 pounds. Dive Friends Bonaire believes that it should not cost divers more to check their belongings and dive gear on trips to Bonaire, and thus they have initiated and launched the Paradise Baggage Rebate Program. This new program, which is effective June 1st through December 15, 2008, allows a rebate to anyone who has had to pay fees to check their luggage on their trip to Bonaire. The program will provide a rebate of up to $40.00 per person, when any Suunto dive computer is purchased at the retail store of Dive Friends Bonaire on Kaya Grandi in Kralendijk (Dive Friends Dive Retail Outlet), or at the Dive Friends Yellow Submarine, Dive Friends Port Bonaire, or Dive Friends Dive Inn locations. To apply for the rebate, choose from any model dive computer from the Suunto line. When presenting payment, also present and turn in the original receipts for the first and/or second bag, and the rebate amount (which will equal the fee charged by the airline up to a maximum of $40.00 per person), will be deducted from the total cost of the dive computer. Receipts must be in the name of the person purchasing the dive computer, and the dates must be related to the Bonaire itinerary. Other restrictions may apply.
