TCB Bonaire | Local Report

From the Director's Desk

Ms. Ronella CroesThis has been a busy past month for TCB. Bonaire has once again received international recognition for its dedication to the environment. The good news continues with increased tourism numbers, added direct flights and added staff to help run our many programs. While we continue to reach our goals of growth with sustainability, TCB is ever mindful of the contribution that our stakeholder, visitors and all the sectors have made to make it all possible.

Bonaire Honored for Leading by Example with Proactive Sustainable Tourism Practices in the Bonaire National Marine Park

Kralendijk, Bonaire - (April 30, 2008) - Bonaire today announces that it is the recipient of the prestigious Islands Magazine/Caribbean Tourism Organization 2008 Sustainable Tourism Award. The Island was awarded the honor in recognition of their longstanding commitment and leadership role in marine conservation and for their proactive measures in protecting the marine environment.

The award was presented by Mr. Ty Sawyer, the Editorial Director for Islands, during an awards luncheon at the 10th Annual Sustainable Tourism Conference in Turks and Caicos. Bonaire's Lieutenant Governor Herbert Domacasse accepted the award on behalf of the Island and was accompanied by Mrs. Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes, Director of Tourism and Elsmarie Beukenboom, Director of STINAPA.

"Bonaire is particularly gratified by this honor as our commitment to preserving and protecting the environment is a deeply held Bonairean belief and guiding principal behind our tourism policy," said Lieutenant Governor Herbert Domacasse. "We especially thank Bonaire's visitors, who continue to support our community and inspire us to remain leaders in sustainable tourism."

The Sustainable Tourism Award recipient was selected by a panel of judges from Islands Magazine and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), who reviewed all of the entries submitted by CTO member countries. Last year, three of Bonaire's eco-programs were honored in the Islands Magazine Hot 100 Blue List, and in 1994 the Bonaire National Marine Park won the Islands Magazine Ecotourism Award.

Located eighty-six miles east of Aruba, the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire offers year-round sunshine, low annual rainfall, pristine coral formations and the most thriving fish population in the Caribbean. Ideal for adventurers, explorers and sun-worshippers alike, Bonaire offers myriad eco-adventure activities including world renowned scuba diving and snorkeling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, landsailing, mountain biking, sea and mangrove kayaking, horseback riding, nature tours, hiking, bird watching, sailing and deep sea and bone fishing. And with a selection of accommodations ranging from full-service oceanfront resorts and condominiums to guesthouses and small inns, Bonaire has something for every lifestyle and budget.

Bonaire continues to be recognized as one of the top destinations worldwide for its sustainable tourism as reported by National Geographic Traveler magazine (March 2004) and Islands magazine (December 2007), and as one of the top diving destinations in the Atlantic/Caribbean for six years in a row in the Scuba Diving magazine's Readers' Choice Awards (2003-2008).

More Good News!

We have been informed that ArkeFly will be adding a second flight from The Nehterlands to Bonaire! In addition to Saturday, the airline will use a Boeing 767-330er to service Bonaire and Curacao on Thursday, starting as per October 2008.

The added flight will help to fill the demand for more seats on this already popular route.  ArkeFly offers a more economical alternative for passengers, especially for families wanting to vacation in the Caribbean.

New Assistant to the Director at TCB

We are very excited to be able to announce the addition of Ms. Rose-Anne Rollan to the TCB family.  She was born and raised on Bonaire and attended local schools before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality and Tourism from the University of the Netherlands Antilles this past March.

“Growing up I always wanted to work in the hotel industry but as I was learning more about the hotel business in school I started leaning toward the Tourism side, as it attracted me more. It is a real pleasure for me to be part of the TCB team, because my biggest wish was to be able to come back to Bonaire and contribute to its economy.”

Rose-Anne will take on the duties of assistant to the director and specifically help to manage special projects and events throughout the year.  She will be working on the upcoming Dive Into Summer and Taste of Bonaire during the months of June-September.

So, please join me in welcoming Rose-Anne. TCB is happy to welcome the new addition.

2007 Statistics

The preliminary reports are in and we have very positive news! A full report will be available on line shortly but I am pleased to report that the North American figures howed an increase of 19.43%! This is due mainly to the improved airlift and marketing efforts of our travel partners who have worked very hard to get the word out how easy it is to vacation on Bonaire.

Europe continues to be a strong market with an increase of 11.44%. The strong Euro and frequent flights contribute to the increases as well as the marketing strategy of our European office.

Another success story is South America with more than a 25% increase. Venezuela still is the largest contributor in spite of difficult financial and political problems in the region. They continue to improve the airlift and it is a challenge that they have been meeting with success.

Last but not least are our Caribbean neighbors, especially Aruba with a 22% increase. What it all translates to is that we had almost 75,000 stay over visitors this year compared to 63, 500 in 2006 reflecting an overall increase of 16.93%. Pa Bien to all of our partners and a big Masha Danki to our visitors!
