LOCAL
REPORT
|
From
the Director's Desk
This
past week, TCB signed an
agreement with Continental
Airlines for its second direct,
non-stop flight from the
US to Bonaire! The aircraft
is a Boeing 737 with 124
seats and will leave Newark
on Dec.16th at 11 :55 pm
and arrive on Bonaire on
the 17th at 5 :40 am giving
folks plenty of time for
a cat nap before orientation
and a first dive! We are
very happy to have been able
to partner with Continental
Airlines. Based on past performance,
we expect to see positive
results from the Newark Flight.
Our thanks to all of those
who have worked so hard to
make it all happen.
Also on the airlift front
we are happy to report that
Arkefly will begin weekly
service from Amsterdam to
the island on Nov 1. They
will be using an aircraft
that will accommodate 200
plus passengers. Along with
the resumption of Martinair
flights to Curacao, we anticipate
being able to better capture
our European markets.
We have also been receiving
more flights from South America
as well. Along with DAE’s
improved schedules and performance,
it is becoming easier for
passengers arriving on our
sister islands to easily
make the short hop to Bonaire.
Another new development
that I think needs a brief
mention is our Web presence.
As you may have heard, TCB
and NetTech have decided
to go our separate ways.
Over the years we have grown
and shared a good relationship
with NetTech and jointly
developed a popular and well
managed site, but as part
of our new branding and product
identification strategy,
we have decided to take the
next step in our growth and
will develop our own TCB
website to promote Bonaire.
Stay tuned!
The next big event on Bonaire
is Regatta. This year it
will be dedicated to Mr.
Thomas Pollehne, a Venezuelan
who has participated in the
event since 1980. He considers
Bonaire as his second home.
We look forward to welcoming
him again and our South American
office is working towards
enticing and making it easier
for other Venezuelan sailors
to join Mr. Pollehne on his
next trip to Bonaire.
Preparations for the Sept
13th to 15th TCB marketing
meeting are underway. It
promises to be very informative
and will focus on obtaining
valuable feedback from our
different partners and on
sharing information. It is
important for us to realize
that together we have to
market and develop the island.
By combining our forces and
creating synergy we will
get the best results and
position Bonaire more effectively
and efficiently in the market
which is composed of numerous
and big players. Results
of the primary research conducted
by TCB will be shared during
the meeting. Marketing plans
and internet strategies will
also be shared as will the
new branding for Bonaire.
As we embark on a fresh
/ renewed marketing approach,
TCB will also be incorporating
different workshops during
this meeting to obtain feedback,
but most importantly to enrich
each participant's knowledge.
TCB will report more specific
details soon.
I would like to pay special
attention to the cleanliness
on island. In my opinion
and in the opinion of many
visitors who visit me at
the office, it is another
precious asset that we have
and that is truly valued
by our locals and visitors!
Let's keep it like this. "Fundashon
Tene Boneiru Limpi" has
a new President, Mr. Rico
Martis, whose dynamism will
help us keep Bonaire clean
and healthy. I'm sure that
we will hear more about projects
of "Fundashon Tene Boneiru
Limpi."

Congratulations
to Dennis and
Rosie Jarboe
with their bronze
medal!!
This
is their 11th
consecutive year
visiting our
island and, according
to them, there
will be many
more. Dennis
and Rosie have
continued and
will continue
to visit Bonaire
for the wonderful
diving, beautiful
reefs and friendly
atmosphere. While
Bonaire is not
the easiest place
to get to, it
is worth the
effort. They
have seen many
changes over
the years and
they hope that
all the new constructions
don’t result
in damage towards
the reef environment. “Coming
to Bonaire and
staying at Happy
Holiday Homes is
like visiting
our extended
family” according
to the couple.
Thank
you for being
part of Bonaire.

BRONZE: |
The
Lesser Family |
The
Lesser Family
is a heavy-set
cliff on Bonaire
because they’ve
been visiting
Bonaire and staying
at Habitat for
12 years now
and we are sure
there will be
12 times 12 more
years of visit
to come.
This
is their story
and own thoughts
about Bonaire:
“My first trip to Bonaire was for business, and since my wife previously
had been frightened on a SCUBA dive in the Pacific she reluctantly agreed to
make at least one dive with me on the trip. After that first one, however, she
was also hooked, and for the rest of the trip we spent more time underwater than
on land. While the diving is fantastic, what keeps us coming back every year
is the people; we have met many people here on the island we now consider to
be good friends, and almost everyone we meet has a kind word. We look forward
to sharing your beautiful island with you many years into the future.” -
Rick Lesser
“I
can stare at
our pictures
of Bonaire and
feel a relaxing
warm feeling.
My family and
I are so very
fortunate to
have traveled
to Bonaire and
have very special
friendships with
many people who
live there. The
kindness everyone
has shown us
is like nothing
else, and every
time we go there
we feel like
we are at home.
I am big on our
family bonding,
as my kids are
22 years old,
20 years old,
and 16 years
old, I fear the
time when I don't
see them very
often. So in
Bonaire we are
always bonding
with dinners
out at the great
restaurants and
have made great
friends with
a lot of people,
great food, great
wine, and great
scuba diving
experiences.” -
Jan Lesser
“My
first trip to
Bonaire I, unfortunately,
only remember
bits and pieces,
but as the years
went by, the
people and Habitat
and the town
have become engraved
in my memory.
Bonaire is my
second home almost.
Even though we
only spent about
a week out of
the year there,
each week has
had such a strong
and positive
impact. We were
very fortunate
to be able to
come back every
year we did,
and hopefully
we will returnfor
many more to
come. Bonaire
isn't just a
place we go,
it has become
part of us and
our lives, and
we will never
forget it.” -
Alese Lesser
“On
one of the first
visits I had
to Bonaire, I
remember playing
polly pockets
with Jack and
Karen's daughter
Tracy. That was
about ten years
ago, and for
some reason that
memory sticks
with me today.
Not only was
the ocean gorgeous
with flourishing
coral everywhere
you would look,
it was the memory
of jumping off
of baby dock
with my brother
and sister that
I also remember
so vividly. Unfortunately,
one year in the
late 90s there
was a hurricane
that hit the
reefs and shores
of Bonaire on
the west side,
but that wasn't
going to stop
us from going
each year. This
way it made it
more exciting
to see the growth
of the coral
each year. The
people that our
family has come
across in Bonaire
also made a big
difference in
our lives. I
have to admit
that despite
how amazing the
water is, the
friends we have
made over the
years, new and
old, continue
to light up our
lives, and for
that we are so
fortunate and
thankful. One
year I remember
the biggest volleyball
team that we
put together
by the pool...
we kept adding
more to each
side that if
the players didn't
announce that
the ball was
theirs, then
four people would
be going after
the same ball.
Good times...Good
friends...Good
family... I couldn't
ask for more.”
- Kathleen Lesser
Bonaire
has been like
a second home
to me and my
family for quite
sometime now.
The diving is
exceptional;
the weather is
great but most
importantly the
people are wonderful.
If it were not
for the people
who have been
so welcoming,
I sincerely doubt
we would have
returned. Bonaire
has now claimed
a special place
in my heart and
I can't wait
to go back.

Dutch
trade promotion successful
During the last World Cup TCB Europe organized
a special promotion for the Dutch trade
and the private sector on Bonaire. The
large number of entries in this ‘pool’ made
it fun to watch the ranking during the
World Cup. Everyday a new leader rose to
the top. TCB’s Joanny Trinidad was
leading the pack during the first weeks.
But after that others came up like ABC’s
Rudy Kloppenborg and KLM’s Vincent
Lafeber. It was up to TCB’s Robert
Bolhuis (ranked 5th) to keep the TCB-honor
high. This successful promotion will be
repeated in two years from now when the
European Cup is at stake.

Nochi
Coffie does great PR in Holland
During the past weeks Nochi Coffie,
the famous Bonairean painter, is visiting
Holland. He is working a large wall-painting
at Lucas Diving, one of the larger dive
shops in the Netherlands. Since Dick
Lucas is not only owner of this dive
shop but also quite an ambassador of
Bonaire, this painting will generate
a lot of free publicity. Thanks to sponsors
TCB and the private sector on Bonaire
Nochi was able to arrange for his air
fare. His activities are not unnoticed
so far by the press, since his arrival
there has been extensive coverage in
newspapers and radio stations. When he
is not working he has had\ time to tour
Holland. TCB’s Marieke Raaff and
Dick Lucas took him to the Rijksmuseum
(see picture).

Press
coverage BonaireBattle direct into
target group
Last month TCB Europe had two long articles
in windsurfing magazines. One was in
the leading Dutch magazine and one in
the leading German magazine. Both articles
covered the BonaireBattle. During the
filming journalists were on the island
of Bonaire. They took pictures and both
wrote a nice story on Bonaire and its
windsurfing opportunities. These articles
increased the number of hits Battle-website.
New
travel trade promotion coming up
Within a couple of weeks TCB Europe
will launch a new travel; trade promotion
called ‘Tijd voor Bonaire’.
This following the tactical decision
in May to put more effort in the Dutch
market and less in the secondary markets
due to changes in the flight schedules
of KLM and the upcoming flights of Arkefly.
This airline will come to Bonaire once
a week out of Amsterdam starting November.
TCB and Arkefly are discussing joint
marketing efforts at this very moment.
E-mail
marketing to consumers
Thanks to efforts over the last year,
TCB Europe can market at very low costs
now. The viral games based on the arrival
database sure got us quite a lot of
e-mail addresses of people willing
to come to Bonaire. Frequently, like
last week, TCB Europe sends out an
e-mail magazine to inform them on the
latest on Bonaire and to encourage
them to book a trip to the island.
It seems to be working since DAE improve.
Also KLM is doing better and Arkefly
will start their service. In the fall
TCB Europe will further expand its
database for more effective e-mail
marketing.

B.pure
Product Line Promotes Bonaire!
After months in the making, B.pure, a boutique
bath and body products company, has debuted
its Bonaire-scented candles! They are part
of a line called “scents of the islands” that
also includes candles from Aruba and Curacao
as well as other selected islands worldwide.
Cathy Preece from Adams Unlimited
pitched the "scents of the islands" idea
to b.pure owner/creator Mary Berry in June
2004 in order to tie Bonaire into the wellness
and spa trend that has been rapidly growing
among US travelers. At that time, b.pure’s
fragrances were all named after US towns
or cities, such as Santa Fe, South Beach
and Charleston. As a result of our pitch
and enthusiasm about working with her for
Bonaire, Mary launched her "island travel
candles" line just this spring. Bonaire's
scented candle is among an exclusive group
of islands so far, including Aruba, Barbados,
Bora Bora and Capri among others.
The b.pure product line is sold through
its website as well as in boutique stores
throughout the U.S. (a full listing of retail
outlets that carry the line can be found
on her website, www.bpurebody.com). The b.pure
products have been featured in Lucky magazine,
Elle Girl magazine, Upscale, Seventeen and
more and continue to grow in popularity.

Highlights
MSNBC.com & Associated
Press (combined circulation over
14,500,000): In an article that first
appeared on MSNBC.com in June 2006 and
then popped up in several newspapers
across the country, Bonaire was featured
as a prime destination to vacation during
hurricane season because of the slim
chance that a hurricane would directly
hit the island. The article also gives
tips for buying travel insurance and
items to be sure to pack if traveling
through the Caribbean during hurricane
season. The article is available online
at www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13828939.

2006 issues of the Washington Post and
the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The article
highlights Bonaire for its close proximity
to the Florida Coast with only a three
hour flight between the two, the lack
of an active hurricane season and its
excellent dive reputation. The article

Arrival
figures show improvement
The airlift has positively improved in the primary
markets and it is reflected in the result of
the statistics. Certainly, it is due in part
to our efforts and investment.
In general the entire region shows an increase
of almost 20% in arrivals. We will continue working
hard to maintain the positive direction the rest
of the year.
As result of the promotional efforts and investment,
the Brazilian market showed a 224.40% increase
in the first four months. That is a 162.3%
increase compared to 2005. All this is due to
the continuous promotional visits in the main
cities to our tour operators and diving schools,
participation in diving events, ad campaign,
press releases, support to tour operators by
Bonaire properties and improvement of the airlift.
Even though Venezuela reflects a small decrease
of 8.1%, the market continues leading the region
but not having flights coming from Caracas on
the weekends to Bonaire and DAE flights from
Valencia via Curacao, makes it difficult for
the high end leisure segment. Nevertheless the
diving groups continue arriving on island, chartering
their own small planes. Bonaire is well known
in the market with the promotion in trade shows,
advertising in specialized press and support
to our trade partners, but the airlift is our
main limitation to bring visitors to the island.
The official numbers to Peru and Ecuador continue
low in both markets, even though at the end of
the first quarter, Peru increased 37.3% and Ecuador
decreased 3.6% compared with the same period
last year. They are not natural markets (no diving)
but counting the KLM flights stop over in Bonaire
via Amsterdam, promotion of the island is maintained
with a moderate ad campaign in specialized magazines
looking for those visitors who enjoy all Bonaire
has to offer.
Colombia showed an increase of 10.7% due to
the recent promotional visit and the dive FAM
on island. The rest of the region, also shows
an increase of 15.6%.

Great news …Brazil
with daily flights
Today Brazilians can use Avianca
daily flights from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo
via Bogotá to
Aruba, connecting the same day to Bonaire
with Dutch Antilles Express. Also Avianca
flies the same route via Curacao, four
times a week. July is high season in Brazil
and definitely it is helping a lot of tour
operator to sell more of the Bonaire hotel
packages.
The decision from Avianca to
increase flights in the route was motivated
by Varig’s
financial difficulties, cancelling flights
in the last weeks.
Varig auctioned!
We are very pleased to announce
Varig was purchased last July 20th. Positive
and great news for the Brazilian tourism industry
and the entire region. Varig is the official
airline, representing Brazil for more than
79 years. It is known around the world for
its high standard of excellence in serving
the Brazilian market.

Joining promotional efforts in Brazil
After reaching an important agreement with the official tour operators in
the Mergulho advertising campaign, the hotel packages will be promoted along
with air tickets included (Avianca/Dae). The ad in co-op with TCB and Plaza
Resort, Divi Flamingo, Coco Palm and Golden Reef starting in August, invites
divers to contact their dive shops or the official tour operators mentioned
in the Ad. To have the tour operators, selling at one single price different
hotel packages with the air tickets included, is a strategic step for the promotion
of Bonaire in the huge market of Brazil.
