Cruise tourism continues to grow on Bonaire.  We welcomed the Crown Princess and the Legacy to our port for the first time.  Kaya Grandi was full of visitors and we gave out lots of literature, etc.   The merchants seemed quite pleased and from comments heard from some of the passengers, they enjoyed their visit.  It is our intention , together with private sector" cooperation, to onvert some of the cruise passengers to stay over guests.
With the increase in the number of ships visiting the island, TCB is working to improve the infraststructure and facilities to better serve the passengers.  We are very aware of the public debate over the pros and cons in regards to cruise ships, but the reality is that they do contribute to the overall economy and if we are judicious in our approach, we can control the direction and head off any negative impact.
We expect about 92.000 passengers this year and 150,000 for next season.  With the new head tax that will be levied next year, we expect to be able to use the funds to make some of the improvements we need to upgrade the shore areas where passengers will frequent.  What we are doing now is to try to make it possible for the debarking passengers to be accommodated in an orderly fashion. We also want to be able to have visitors see Rincon and the other parts of the island that are normally not seen.  All in all, we are making a commitment to the cruise tourism sector which will hopefully benefit all levels of the economy.
An issue that has been brought to light has been the recent problems with break-ins.  The problem is not a new one and we have been made painfully aware of the consequences.  I have been working with the Lt. Governor and he has personally taken an active role in the solving of the problem meeting with the agencies and police and the judicial department as well as the victims of the break-ins.  The good news is that most of the culprits have been apprehended.  It is unfortunate that many are among the youth which leads us to put more emphasis on education and teaching tourism awareness and the value we need to place on the industry that provides the income for the island.
Also, this Dec. 16 is the inaugural flight of the direct, non stop Newark Bonaire Flight.  This marks the second Continental non stop that will service Bonaire each Week.  More good news is that the current Houston Flight has up graded its aircraft to accommodate more passengers from 124 to 155 passengers. Continental is quite pleased with our passenger load and it looks like our future flights will arrive with quite a few visitors.

TCB-EUROPE REPORT

TCB Europe at Arke Tutorial

November 16, 2006 Arke organized a tutorial for its staff. Since Arkefly started to fly to Bonaire their staff needs to know about the destination. TCB’s Marieke Raaff went to Enschede to meet with  the travel agents. She gave them a preview of the next edition of BonaireVisits.tv. Hetty Grote (Divi) and Lisa Muelhemann (Buddy Dive and Caribbean Club) joined Marieke to meet over 30 people at the Arke HQ. Now they all know about our great diving possibilities, about windsurfing, about our history and culture and of course they just felt the vibes that Bonaire is quite another island compared to Curacao and Aruba.

Press coverage to boost Dutch marketPress coverage to boost Dutch market

Since Arkefly joined KLM in connecting Bonaire and Amsterdam we can expect more Dutch tourists. But they do not come ‘just like that’so we need to give it some serious marketing effort. This fall and winter TCB Europe will increase its PR-activities beginning this winter which is by far our most important marketing season. Mostly it takes some time to see our efforts printed, but this time the Algemeen Dagblad delivered rapidly. Quite a large article appeared in this leading Dutch newspaper! Movies live, press campaign startedMovies live, press campaign started

Three new movies starring Peer Mascini went ‘live’ last week to officially start BonaireVisits 2. After teasing the visitors of www.BonaireVisits.tv with a preview, our audience was informed the brand new movies of Peer on Bonaire are to be seen at the website. After promoting diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and our other main activities, this time we also shot a more unknown part of Bonaire. Peer Mascine went land sailing!  Of course we also see him on other parts of the island. The PR-department also launched the PR-campaign around these new movies. Our trade partners (tour operators and travel agents) were informed prior to the consumer launch giving them always a head start in marketing! For the Peer-movies we like to thank again Den Laman for hosting and arranging car rental.
